All twenty-two women, including the AKA president Myra Davis Hemmings, decided to leave AKA and found Delta Sigma Theta. An older member of AKA, Nellie Quander, heard about their plans and essentially told the women that they could stop all these plans and continue as members of AKA or leave the organization.
They were unhappy with the priorities of AKA and decided to change the letters, write a new constitution, and essentially begin a new organization.
